Boiler 2

The colder months are fast-approaching, so it’s really important that you get your boiler ready, to make sure you don’t have any unexpected surprises.

Here are our top tips to make sure your boiler is set up and ready to use for winter.

Get your boiler serviced

It’s really important to get your boiler serviced because it reduces the risk of any leaks, fires and carbon monoxide poisoning. You should check your boiler each year and for most boilers, servicing is essential to keep your warranty valid.

Gas safe checks

You can get your boiler serviced by a Gas Safe Registered engineer to make sure your boiler is safe to use – they’ll be able to identify gas leaks. It’s also really important to make sure you have a carbon monoxide alarm in your home, this alarm will be able to detect any gas leaks too.

Get a power flush

A power flush is just a deep clean of your central heating system, it helps remove any dirt and debris from the pipes. Getting a power flush makes your central heating system more energy efficient and helps you save money on your energy bills.

Your Gas Safe Registered engineer or a qualified plumber can do a power flush for you.

Bleed your radiators

You should test your radiators before the colder months arrive. You can test your radiators by turning your heating onto full – if your radiator is hot at the bottom but cold at the top, this means your radiators need to be bled to remove any air bubbles.

Here’s how to bleed your radiators:

  • Place an old towel or bowl underneath the valve of the radiator to catch any liquid that may come out
  • Use your radiator key to turn the valve anti clockwise
  • Close the valve when the radiator stops hissing and water begins to run

Remember, it’s really important to test your central heating system during late summer or early autumn, so you have enough time to repair anything that isn’t working as it should be.
