It’s Fire Door Safety Week!
Fire Safety 25/09/2024
Fire Door Safety Week is between Monday 23rd September – Friday 27th September 2024. It highlights the importance of checking your fire doors to make sure they’re still in working order, to keep you safe in case a fire starts.
Why are fire doors so important?
Fire doors help prevent a fire from spreading into other areas of a building.
If a fire was to break out, a fire door will slow the spread of smoke and fire from getting into the escape routes for a minimum of 30 minutes.
How should I check my fire door?
- Check to see that there’s not any sign of damage to either side of the door, the door frame, hinges and the overhead closing device
- Open the door fully and let it close automatically – The door should fully shut into the door frame with ease

How often should I check my fire door?
We’ll write to you at least once a year to remind you how to check your fire doors.
If you live in a building that’s over 11 metres high, we'll check your fire door annually. If you don’t, we’ll check them as and when we visit your building for other appointments and safety checks.
However, you should still make sure you’re checking them regularly yourself to make sure they’re in good condition and will work properly in the event of a fire.
How do I report a broken fire door?
If your fire door is damaged, broken or not working correctly, then you need to report it to us as soon as possible. You can do this by calling 0345 60 20 540.
