Accessing food services
Live well Cost of Living 15/01/2025
We know that January can be a tough month, with the dark mornings and getting back on budget after Christmas. That’s why, as part of our Live Well campaign, we’ve pulled together lots of resources and organisations that offer a range of different food services so that feeding yourself and your family is one less thing you need to worry about.
Emergency food
The Trussell Trust is the largest food bank organisation in the UK. Not only do they provide food, but they also provide household essentials. If you’d like to find out more about them, you can visit their website or give us a call on 0345 60 20 540 and we’ll help refer you to them.
Free school meals
Your child may be eligible for free school meals if you receive Income Support, Child Tax Credit, Universal Credit and many other benefits.
You can find out more about checking if your child is eligible or applying for free school meals on the Gov.uk website.
Healthy Start scheme
If you’re more than 10 weeks pregnant, or have a child under 4, you could be eligible for the Healthy Start scheme which helps you to buy cupboard essentials like milk, fruit and veg and tinned goods.
You can find out more on the NHS website
Community shops
There are lots of community shops that offer food and household essentials for you and your family at a sustainable price. Some shops have set prices, like £5 for one bag of groceries, others work on an annual subscription basis and some are completely free.
