The genderbread person
Who are we?
Hello! We’re Harmony, Midland Heart’s LGBT+ Colleague Network.
It’s been brilliant to meet so many of you at Birmingham Pride this year and we’re glad you’re curious about the genderbread person we gave you!
What is the genderbread person?
There are lots of different definitions for LGBT+ terms, and different discussions taking place about LGBT+ identity, but we’ve found the genderbread person really useful for helping us understand identity.
It’s a tool used to break down ideas about gender, sex and attraction into bitesize chunks, and encourage us to stop seeing them as fixed, inflexible concepts.
Gender is largely based on social and cultural ideas. This is different to sex, which is defined by physical or biological characteristics. The genderbread person explores how our gender influences, and is influenced by, the following elements:
- Identity – how you personally experience and define your own gender
- Attraction – the way you’re drawn (or not drawn) towards other people
- Sex – your body/anatomy or physical traits
- Expression – how you choose to share your thoughts and feelings about your gender, and how this is viewed by society
So as you can see, we are all a little bit different in how we look, what we think and how we feel, and this makes the world really colourful and interesting.
The genderbread person acts as a reminder that it’s completely fine if you’re not sure about any aspect of your gender, sexuality or identity! You can read more on the Genderbread website.
